Corner Boys by John MacKenna
UK National Tour 2018
London Press Night: Wednesday 24th October, Lion and Unicorn Theatre
CORNER BOYS

During a sold-out national tour of Ireland in 2016, award winning playwright John MacKenna’s play Corner Boys was described as ‘hilariously funny, heartbreakingly sad but, above all, true to life’ by RTE Radio 1, Corner Boys is now embarking on a 2018 UK national tour, playing the London Fringe and Irish Cultural Centres around the country.

Writer John MacKenna has won the Hennessy Literary Award, the Irish Times Fiction Award and the Cecil Day- Lewis Award.

Let’s go back to 1963. And to a small village in rural Ireland. The visit of American President John F Kennedy brings romance to Mary and Alice’s lives, as they work in the local drapery shop. Three unemployed ‘corner boys’ spend their days trying to fill their empty lives hanging out on the village square. This powerful play exposes the light and dark sides of rural Irish life in the sixties – the hell-fire religious sermons, the carnivals, the humour, the dreams and the desperation. This is a story of dreaming of a life and love, in another time, yet a time still alive in Irish ex-pat memory.

Producer, Fiona Kelly of Ladies Who Punch Productions comments, ‘We are thrilled to present our debut UK production of Corner Boys by award-winning writer John MacKenna. Having toured the play in Ireland 2 years ago, I am very much looking forward to getting back into rehearsals and bringing the play to life again for the UK audience. Corner Boys is one of the most controversial plays to hit the UK stage this year – it’s a powerful and tragic story of yearning for a life away from the corner of the village square - if only these boys were brave and bold enough to follow their dreams."

Speaking on this being her third time to direct the production, Marian Brophy comments ‘Having had 2 successful tours of Ireland with Corner Boys, I am ecstatic that our third tour of the production is for audiences across the UK this year.  I feel very strongly that the themes in the play will resonate in particular with Irish ex-pats, Irish communities in England and those of Irish descent. There has always been a strong tie between our 2 countries and cultures, with many Irish people in the 50s and 60s seeing England as the most viable escape route, emotionally and economically. Those themes are very much there in the play and through each character’s story.’

The UK tour will be playing to audiences who are regular visitors to Irish Cultural Centres and not necessarily theatre- goers. This production of Corner Boys aims to get the audience talking and reminiscing about the Ireland of the 60s that many emigrated to the U.K from, along with a throwback to the Ireland they left behind.
